FanDuel Fact Sheet & Review
FanDuel is one of the biggest names in daily fantasy sports, paying more than $1 billion in prizes every year.
Fanduel Sportsbook has also launched in Meadowlands New Jersey and is available online/mobile.
The DFS operator has made a lot of changes over the past few years. That includes a new logo and an improved user experience on its web and mobile platforms, along with a freeroll offer for new customers that allows you to get free contest entries when you make an account.
FanDuel software
FanDuel’s software is clean and functional — it was updated ahead of the 2016 daily fantasy football season — and what it lacks in glitz it more than makes up for speed and ease of use.
There are currently two different ways players can access their favorite real-money daily fantasy games:
- Browser-based client: Players looking for the full FanDuel experience are best served visiting the main site from their PC or Mac.
- Mobile platform: FanDuel’s iOS app has been around since 2014 and has continually been improved. The mobile software is compatible with all iPhone, iPad and other iOS powered devices version 7.0 and up. FanDuel also now has a fully functioning Android app available via Google Play. Even without an app, FanDuel’s main site has been optimized nicely for smartphone and tablet devices.
Games available
FanDuel’s menu of game formats is a robust one. It includes:
- Guaranteed prize pool (GPP) tournaments: GPPs are the bread and butter of FanDuel’s contest offerings. On any given Sunday (or any night for that matter) players can parlay a small tournament buy-in into five-, six- and even seven-figure scores.
- Head-to-head: It’s just you vs. one other player in a traditional head-to-head match. FanDuel also offers “H2H Matrix,” a game variant that pits a single player against several other players in head-to-head matches.
- Contests: FanDuel’s selection of contests for three to 100 players are site- or user-created contests with varying sizes, entry fees and prize structures. User-created leagues can be made open to the public, or restricted to the creator’s friends.
- 50/50s: Half the field doubles their buy-in, and the other half go home empty handed: 50/50s are that simple. They’re also a low risk way for new players to become acquainted with the game.
- Multipliers: A percentage of the field can double or triple up their entry fee (or even more for some contests) if they are in a winning position.
FanDuel’s games are spread across a variety of sports:
- NFL
- Major League Baseball
- NBA
- NCAA
- WNBA
- NHL
- Soccer (English Premier League)
- Golf
What’s new at FanDuel in 2021?
FanDuel has rolled out a lot of new features in recent years.
Single-game contests
Don’t want to research a whole slate of games? Now you can research just one.
FanDuel now offers contests based on just a single athletic event for sports like baseball, football, hockey and basketball. For instance, it offers a contest just based on the Super Bowl.
Beginner contests
If you haven’t played many daily fantasy sports contests, there’s no reason to be scared off in FanDuel’s Beginner contests. You’ll only be playing against other users that are also new to the game (less than 50 contests played).
There three types of Beginner contests: 50/50s, Tournaments, and Double Ups. Beginners can also enter Intermediate contests, which are off-limits to experienced players.
Experienced player indicators
Want to avoid people that play a lot of DFS or who have won a lot of money? No problem. FanDuel identifies these players with an icon.
Contest entry limits
FanDuel limits the number of entries that a single player can have in a contest, so you won’t be going up against a professional with hundreds of lineups in most cases.
You can filter the lobby to find contests that allow just one entry per player.
Advanced entry feature
If you want to play in a contest that does allow you to have more than one lineup, FanDuel’s ‘Advanced Entry’ feature now lets anyone enter and edit multiple lineups with ease.
And you know you are on a level playing field, as third-party software isn’t allowed at FanDuel.
Golf, soccer, WNBA
While FanDuel used to stick with the major team sports in the US. This year, it has rolled out contests for golf (PGA Tour), soccer (EPL) and the WNBA.
Late-swap
Taking a page out DraftKings’ playbook, FanDuel now offers some contests where you can change out players that appear in later games.
Mixup
FanDuel is now offering a simpler version of its core game for baseball, where you only have to pick five players, called Mixup.
Registration process
In the time it takes to fry an egg, new users can register for a FanDuel account. All that’s required is a few basic pieces of information. From there, it’s off to the funding page.
FanDuel – Cashiering
FanDuel players typically have little trouble funding their account, as the site accepts most major debit/credit cards (AmEx excluded) and PayPal transactions. Note that you must provide your social security number in the US, as part of new site requirements.
Withdrawals are handled quickly through PayPal, typically processing in 48 hours or less. For those lacking a PayPal account, the only other payout option is to request a check.
Processing times for checks take somewhere in the vicinity of 7 to 10 days.
Where is FanDuel legal?
FanDuel is available for real money play in 40 out of the 50 U.S. states, the exceptions being Alabama, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nevada, Texas and Washington.
In these states, the legality of fantasy sports has come into question, so FanDuel has agreed not to allow users in those places to enter real-money contests. Players can take part DFS contests with no prizes, however.
Certain residents of Canada can also wager on FanDuel contests.
FanDuel company background
Since its humble roots in late 2007, FanDuel has grown from a five-man operation to the largest DFS company around.
Interestingly enough, the startup behind FanDuel (Hubdub Ltd) started out in the web-based prediction market. But after receiving its first round of funding from Pentech Ventures and Scottish Enterprise in early 2009, Hubdub’s founders decided to shift attention to their potentially more lucrative spin-off, FanDuel.
The daily fantasy sports business model caught the attention of investors, propelling FanDuel to a series of funding rounds. The biggest of those came in 2015, when it closed a round of $275 million, putting it squarely in a nearly untouchable duopoly with DraftKings.
The company has led the way in pushing for the legalization and regulation of paid-entry fantasy sports across the country in the past year.
FanDuel was supposed to merge with DraftKings in 2017 but was denied by federal regulators.
What is FanDuel’s approach to DFS?
FanDuel leverages its position as DFS market share leader to host some of the biggest GPPs in the daily fantasy space. It has forged partnerships with major sporting organizations such as the NBA to spread brand awareness, and hasn’t shied away from spending significant sums on print, radio and television advertisements.
Compared to its main rival DraftKings, FanDuel offers a more intuitive, streamlined daily fantasy experience; one that offers just enough features to satiate the hardcore crowd without alienating novice players.

That opened the door for both retail and online sportsbooks to open the following year, with the first legal sports bets being made in March2020. Meanwhile, in August 2020, FanDuel became the first sportsbook in the state to make its debut online before opening its retail sportsbook location.
Note, however, that Illinois does prohibit wagering on college teams that hail from the state.
